Newcastle Beat Palermo In UEFA Cup!

WOW!!! Many of you know that I follow Newcastle United (a football/soccer team in the English Premier League). This season they've been a little hard to follow - they currently sit in 17th spot out of 20 teams in the Premiership, just one spot above the relegation zone. However, last year they were high enough to have won themselves a spot in the Intertoto Cup. This summer they won all of their games in the Intertoto Cup, which gave them a spot in the European UEFA Cup. It's not the Champions League, but there are still many good teams in the competition. For some reason they can't win their regular games (especially bitter was a recent 0-0 draw at home against 20th placed Charlton). However, against European teams in the UEFA Cup they are doing very well. Last night was the topper - playing away against Palermo, currently sitting in the top spot in the top Italian league, they won 1-0 thanks to a great Milner cross put away with a header by Luque (both pictured above). They did it with a squad missing many of their top players (Duff, Given, Owen, Babayaro, Parker, Carr and Ameobi). It was an exciting game, with lots of action and runs back n' forth, with several missed chances on both sides. The win will hopefully carry over to their clash this weekend with Sheffield United. It's been a tough season so far - but this win really makes me excited for the team again and hopefully they can string a few wins together and move up the table.
