El Ray - Scandinavian Surf: Free Downloadable Songs & Videos
El Ray has been one of my favorite surf/instro bands of the last few years. Their music is great and they have delivered a series of outstanding releases that feature cool cover art and excellent songwriting. Their website, at http://www.elray.dk, has a few songs and videos available for free download, giving you a preview of what this great band is capable of!If any of you out there know of any surf/instro websites, for bands, record labels, or otherwise, that have free downloads please leave a comment with the link. I'll check 'em all out (if there are any) and will post up full write-ups here.

Mary Poppins & When Harry Met Sally Made Into Horror Films
Two seemingly harmless movies, with the help of some creative editing and creepy music, made into horror movie trailers. Pretty funny stuff!

The Surfites - Big Pounder Video

The Surfites have put together a video for the title track from their upcoming Double Crown CD, Big Pounder! The CD is set to come out March 2007 - we are just putting the finishing touches on the artwork, then it'll be off to the manufacturer...
The Surfites - Big Pounder
Jim Flora Books
To me album artwork is a very important part of an album (or CD, or 7", or 8-track, or cassette ,etc.). There have been many talented artists over the years, but one of my all-time faves is Jim Flora. He also had did the artwork for some children's books - over the years I've actually had better luck finding his books than his albums! Among his great children's books are The Fabulous Firework Family, and Leopold, the See-Through Crumbpicker I would really like to find a copy of The Day The Cow Sneezed - any leads out there? Thankfully, Irwin Chusid has put together 2 beautiful books featuring Jim Flora's artwork. You can get both of them through Amazon.com.Friday, January 26, 2007

She specializes in handmade accessories like cuffs, checkbook covers, wallets, scarves and hand balms. Many of the items are made with retro/hipster themes. Check out the selection at:http://www.eklektrikdesign.com. She will be adding more items over the coming months.

TV In Japan Website
I just stumbled across this crazy/cool website called "TV In Japan". Basically it's just a big collection of YouTube clips from a variety of TV shows. However, the creator/s of this website have done all of the searching for you, funneling down their selection to a group of interesting/funny/disturbing clips. One of my faves was The Tarako Cupie Girls, who feature in a series of adds for a food product made primarily of spaghetti noodles and cod roe. They have become hugely popular in Japan, and who knows, they might even make it big over here someday!

Man Or Astro-Man? Live At Touch & Go Anniversary Fest
Okay, this may be old news, but most of you probably know that last summer Man Or Astro-Man? got back together, with the original lineup, for the Touch & Go anniversary festival in Chicago (I think they did one other show in Alabama or Georgia too). Anyway, over at Archive.org you can download their Chicago show - just go here. Understandably, it's a little rough at times, but they've obviously still got it. Too bad they can't find a way to make it more of a permanent thing - I'd love to have some new MOA? material in my collection, or a live show or two in the Northwest!
Krazy Kids Items From The 50's/60's/70's On Flickr
Okay, this whole entry could be about this product alone. I'm sure many of you have had "astronaut ice cream". Well, this cereal has that (or some form of it), mixed in with "nutritious cereal". And look at the happy ice cream man! And the product name - Kellogg's Kream Krunch....I hope there isn't too much to read into the fact that the initials are KKK and the happy ice cream man is made of vanilla ice cream! There are many, many more cool products shown here.
Turntable With Stuffed Bird
This artist in the Netherlands is doing some interesting work. My favorite though is this, a turntable and a taxidermied bird, fitted with a needle in it's beak. You can hear a sample of what the audio sounds like at the artist's website.
Fascinating Look At Recording Of Chipmunks Holiday Song
Fascinating Look At Recording Of Chipmunks Holiday SongOkay, I'm a little late with this, but it's still pretty cool. This site has the original version and a slowed down version, allowing you to hear how the "Chipmunks" sang their parts. They had to harmonize and enunciate carefully, but really, really slow. Check it out here.

Fifty Foot Combo - Evil A Go-Go
One of the most requested CD's/LP's over the years has been Fifty Foot Combo's Evil A Go-Go. I was interested in re-releasing it on Double Crown Records, but was told by the band that the rights to the music were with the label that originally released it, and chances were that the disc (which quickly sold out) would probably never be reissued. I don't know anyone that has it - bizarrely, the band doesn't even have it! You'd almost think that it never even existed! However, thanks to someone on the Surf Guitar 101 forum, it is now available for free download. I don't usually encourage downloading modern recordings like this, but given the current status of this release I don't think the band will have a huge beef with this finally being available (if they do, I'm more than happy to delete this link). Anyway, click here and enjoy!http://www.megaupload.com/?d=6JKQZZ5S

Newcastle Beat Palermo In UEFA Cup!
WOW!!! Many of you know that I follow Newcastle United (a football/soccer team in the English Premier League). This season they've been a little hard to follow - they currently sit in 17th spot out of 20 teams in the Premiership, just one spot above the relegation zone. However, last year they were high enough to have won themselves a spot in the Intertoto Cup. This summer they won all of their games in the Intertoto Cup, which gave them a spot in the European UEFA Cup. It's not the Champions League, but there are still many good teams in the competition. For some reason they can't win their regular games (especially bitter was a recent 0-0 draw at home against 20th placed Charlton). However, against European teams in the UEFA Cup they are doing very well. Last night was the topper - playing away against Palermo, currently sitting in the top spot in the top Italian league, they won 1-0 thanks to a great Milner cross put away with a header by Luque (both pictured above). They did it with a squad missing many of their top players (Duff, Given, Owen, Babayaro, Parker, Carr and Ameobi). It was an exciting game, with lots of action and runs back n' forth, with several missed chances on both sides. The win will hopefully carry over to their clash this weekend with Sheffield United. It's been a tough season so far - but this win really makes me excited for the team again and hopefully they can string a few wins together and move up the table.

More Free Music - Man Or Astroman Peel Sessions Download
Jamie's Run Out Groove blog has posted a complete Man Or Astro-man? appearance on the John Peel BBC show here. It's from 1997, just about the point where they went from their surfy early stuff to their more experimental later stuff. While you're at it, check out this video on YouTube - it's an interview with one of the Man Or Astroman? clone project bands, explaining their creation and reason for being.

Double Crown On The Rocks - Podcast #15
Double Crown On The Rocks - Podcast #15Okay, this show was supposed to be done about a week before the Double Crown On The Rocks fest, but I got way too busy preparing for the shows, as well as practicing with my band, The Toga Kings. I stuck with the original idea for the podcast though, so this show features songs by most of the bands that played the fest, along with a song from the new Los Straitjackets/Kaiser George CD called "Twist Party" and a live song from The Kilaueas. The next show, #16, will be a Halloween episode with lots of spooky surf n' garage rock tracks. If you have any requests/comments, please send an e-mail to: records@dblcrown.com or use the handy comment form below.

Double Crown....ON THE ROCKS - Night Two Review
The evening kicked off with a 25 minute set from local duo Chris Con Carne. It was only 8:30, so there weren't too many people yet, but Chris played a haunting set of gritty, emotional blues. After a few songs he was joined on stage on drums by Dan Lowinger of Footstompin' Trio. The remainder of their set was more upbeat, energetic blues that rocked right on through to the finish.
Next up were the Footstompin' Trio (which actually has 4 members). The crowd was still a bit sparse, which made their rockin' set a little awkward. I'm just so used to seeing them play in front of a large crowd of drunken bastards throwing beer at them. It was just a little weird to see them playing the same music in front of 40-50 people...it was just a too subdued for what they do. Musically they sounded just as good, if not better, than their recent performances. They kinda broke up a few years ago, but all members are still in town and they got together specially for this show. Most of their set was songs from the CD that they did for Double Crown, a fine mix of vocals and instrumentals.
They're a tough act to follow, but with over 20 years of experience Girl Trouble was just the band to do it. The crowd was bigger by this point and we were all treated to a fine set of T-town faves from throughout their long career. I was especially stoked to hear them play Elvis' "Girls, Girls, Girls", a song that they do better than the King - just so much energy, and heck, I'm a sucker for any GT song that has KP wailing on the sax!
Following them was a short set from the reunited Toga Kings. I play organ in the band, with the other members coming from Bellingham, Seattle and Spokane. It was tough to find everyone and coordinate a couple of practice sessions, but we finally got a 4 song set ready for the show. We played "Rumble", an original called "You're Outta Your Head", "Cinderella" and "Louie Louie". The main inspiration for the set was The Sonics and we ripped and wailed through the set in less than 10 minutes. Of course, a bunch of beer was tossed our way when we played - a reminder of our shows at the 3-B Tavern nearly a decade ago. The highlight was Johnny Bartlett joining us on sax to play on "Louie Louie". Man, if you told me 12 years ago that someday I'd be on stage playing we Johnny Bartlett I absolutely would not have believed you. Being back on stage was awesome - that may end up being the final show of the Toga Kings, but heck, what a way to go!
After the beer was cleaned off the stage it was time for the Barbary Coasters to play. They played a solid 45 minute set of songs from their CD's, including "The Hip", "Honey For Sale", "House Of Bamboo", "The Flirt" and others, including a few very cool instros. They also played a happy anniversary song for Double Crown done to the tune of the "Happy Birthday" song - it took my wife and I by surprise and was very cool - thank guys! They are a very entertaining band - not only with their music, but their between song banter. If they ever play in your region do not miss them - they put on an excellent show!
The Kilaueas capped off the evening with a fun, solid set of instrumental mayhem. They played songs from each of their CD's, along with a few crowd-pleasing cover tunes. This was their third show of the tour with the Barbary Coasters, and it was entertaining to watch the two bands interact with each other. When Johnny Bartlett introduced the Kilaueas, he said "Third time's a charm, boys - maybe you'll get it right this time". The Kilaueas got their revenge during their set by calling the Barbary Coasters the "Bavarian Toasters". They played a 10 minute version of "Caravan" with a fine drum solo by Oli. In the middle Pat, the organ player of the Barbary Coasters, came on stage to play Ralf's Hallmark Swept-Wing guitar. After standing there with it for a minute or so he walked up to the mic and said "I can't play guitar". The band responded by cranking up Guitar 101 fave "Iron Man". It was also funny to watch the band respond to a variety of equipment failures - the stuff made it through the whole tour, but was finally giving out at the last show. Tom's bass guitar strap broke, the sole of his shoe started falling off, and Ralf broke a string during the last song. He kept the dead guitar around his neck while Johnny Bartlett brought up his guitar and put it around Ralf's neck to finish the song. At 1:45 am it was closing time and the evening had to come to an end.
Overall it was a fun 2 day festival of music from 9 different bands. The first show was just shy of selling out. The second night was only about 1/4 full, but it was a much larger venue. My thanks go out to all of the bands that played the shows and to the staff at the venues that made everything go so smoothly. The second show was recorded, so over the next month or so I'm gonna work out a way to make at least some of the recordings available for those who didn't make it. I'm already working on doing it again next year, probably in October 2007, so start making your travel plans now!

Double Crown....ON THE ROCKS - Night One Review
I started off the day getting ready for a practice session for my old band, The Toga Kings, who are getting together to play for the first time in 8 years. We used to play the 3-B Tavern quite often when we were together, but stopped playing after a really bad, crazy show that we just don't remember much about (what we do remember is alcohol, cupcakes, shaving cream and our bass player playing "Another One Bites The Dust" for 5 minutes solo while standing on stage wearing just his underwear and Chuck Taylors). Anyway, we practiced for 3 hours and caught up on what we've all been doing for the last 8 years and surprisingly, we actually sounded better than we did back when we were playing semi-regularly. We are practicing again for a couple of hours, then playing the big show at the Nightlight tonight.
So after that I headed down to Chirbin's for night one of the Double Crown ON THE ROCKS fest at Chiribin's. The night started off with the only local instro band, The All-Nighters. They were dressed up like a cross between the New York Dolls and Sigue Sigue Sputnik, but their sound was pure surf/instro bliss. These guys are really good, mixing surf standards with a bunch of stuff that could of come off any of the early Sadies albums. The crowd really got into it and although when they started there were only about 50 people in the club, by the time they ended the set the crowd was near capacity (about 150 people).
Next up were The DT's, a local hard soul/garage combo featuring Dave Crider (Estrus Records/Mono Men/Watts). Just like you'd imagine, their sound isn't too far removed from the Mono Men, but with female vocals (provided by Diana Young-Blanchard, who was the singer of Estrus combo Madame X). They were probably the most popular band of the night and their set took the show to another level. The crowd moved from simple cocktails and beer to 40 ouncers (this is the only club I've ever seen that sells 40 ouncers, mainly PBR) and the level of drunkeness definitely kicked up a notch.
To close out the night was The Party Favorites, a band with a sound similar to Chris Con Carne, but done as a trio. They always have a stage gimmick - for this show the theme was the Nintendo game "Duck Hunt". They had a large projector displaying the game, with audience members taking turns playing. The band members were all dressed up in full-body duck costumes. They were the perfect closers for the evening and left the crowd in an exhausted, yet happy mood as they filed into the street at 2am.
Tonight's the big one, at the Nightlight here in town with Chris Con Carne, Footstompin' Trio, Toga Kings, Girl Trouble, Barbary Coasters and Kilaueas. Should be a blast!

Kilaueas West Coast Tour Comes To An Explosive End This Weekend!
The Kilaueas first West Coast tour ends this weekend with two exciting shows. Tonight at the Funhouse in Seattle they play with The Barbary Coasters (from San Francisco) and Seattle's premier surf band The 'Verb. Then tomorrow night they travel up to Bellingham for the Double Crown "On The Rocks" fest at the Nightlight, playing with The Barbary Coasters, Girl Trouble, The Toga Kings, The Footstompin' Trio and Chris Con Carne. Thanks to everyone that has come out to see the band on tour. They have had a really great time and are very happy with how it's all gone. Big thanks also to all of the bands and individuals that have helped book shows, given them a place to stay and everything that has made this tour so successful!!!

I just got this press release from Press Darling PR. Also hitting stores soon is a live disc from the Sadies from Yep Roc Records called "In Concert, Volume One"THE SADIES
TALES OF THE RAT FINK
THE SADIES’ all-original instrumental soundtrack to hot rods and cool rides in Tales of the Rat Fink, Ron Mann’s animated documentary on Ed “Big Daddy” Roth, Kustom Car culture and the “anti Mickey Mouse,” Rat Fink
Street date October 17 - animated Sadies “monster” drag-racing video out soon!
If this music doesn't put you in the front seat of a hot rod and make your thighs quiver - nothing will. - Filmmaker Ron Mann, Tales of the Rat Fink
Greetings Finks and Finkettes,
When word leaked out that Canada’s “best live band,” The Sadies, were teaming up with Canada’s most distinctive documentary filmmaker, Ron Mann, to create the sounds for a film about 1950s/60s Kustom car maven Ed “Big Daddy” Roth and Roth’s most beloved creation, a bug-eyed, fanged rodent known as Rat Fink (the “anti-Mickey Mouse”), both music and pop culture fans alike knew to expect something special. Mann has described his vision for Tales of the Rat Fink, which is largely animated, as “Fantasia meets She-Devils on Wheels,” and not just any band would have the finesse and flair to pull off that vision. But the Sadies were up to the challenge.
Fueled by the twin guitars of the Good brothers, Dallas and Travis, along with drummer Mike Belitsky and upright bassist Sean Dean, The Sadies own any genre they touch and have, over the past decade, created their own instantly identifiable blend of surf, cosmic country and Ennio Morricone-esque spaghetti Western originals, all imbued with the band’s distinct feel and appreciation for psychedelia and garage punk. Versatile enough to back everyone from Neko Case (they’re the live band on The Tigers Have Spoken and frequently co-write with Case), Heavy Trash (Jon Spencer’s raunchabilly side project) and cult R&B artist Andre Williams, The Sadies were more than ready to collaborate on a film score.
Mann, the award-winning director of Comic Book Confidential and Grass, was familiar with the Toronto four-piece and discovered that, as well as sharing his enthusiasm for pop culture, The Sadies were already fans of Ed Roth and had the musical goods to create an audio tour through the film’s animated joyride of hot rod history and Ed Roth’s life.
The Sadies’ Dallas Good explained in an interview: "Ron gave us complete freedom. We just write what we saw as appropriate for the film, and to have that trust from the filmmaker is great. The film is going to be a chronology of not only his career but the hot rod, as well. Some of the songs are barely five seconds long, but even that requires an element of creativity. At the same time, we can't just reinvent the wheel. This type of thing has a specific sound.”
The Sadies were involved in the collaboration from the beginning, and were told that Tales of the Rat Rink would be a history not only of Roth and his monster creations but the history of American Hot Rod culture. Of course, the Sadies were touring, organizing guests for a double live album (In Concert: Vol. 1 out August 2006), and recording bits and pieces for the soundtrack at studios here and abroad. Says Mann: “Over the next year or so they would mail me a CD from
Also fueling the process was the list of voice-over celebrities who agreed to be involved: John Goodman, Ann-Margret, The Smothers Brothers, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, Jay Leno, Robert Williams, Billy F. Gibbons, Tom Wolfe, Brian Wilson and Matt Groening. By completion of the film, The Sadies had submitted over 80 pieces of music. Fifty pieces were used in the movie and the best are featured here. (The songs titles all correspond to clubs the Sadies have played over their extensive, never-ending North American treks.)
Including sound affects and a groovy beatnik spoken word piece by Ed Roth himself on the nature of “art,” Tales of the Rat Fink’s 26 tracks - think early surf instrumentals, Link Wray and Joe Meek – stand alone as a rockin’ CD guaranteed to put a tiger in your tank and some extra muscle under your hood. The Sadies’ homage to Cali mid-20th century Kustom car culture, hot rods, cool rides and Roth’s bug-eyed monster creations manages to evoke the feel of a bygone era while capturing the excitement of burning rubber, revving engines and good, greasy – and, of course, dangerous - fun.

Double Crown On The Rocks - Podcast #13
Double Crown On The Rocks - Podcast #13This show is a little later that usual, but there's been a lot going on here at Double Crown HQ. The most recent distraction has been the World Cup tournament. I am a huge soccer fan, and even play 3 times/week. I am trying to follow several teams through the tournament - the US, England, Brazil and Germany, and it's turning out to be nearly a game every night. Once the tournament moves beyond the group phase I won't have quite as many games to watch. I have also FINALLY wrapped up work on Continental Magazine #13 (featuring Southern Culture On The Skids and The Barbary Coasters). It is available for purchase from the Double Crown website at: www.dblcrown.com/catalog.html. This week's show is another mix of old and new surf/instro tunes. Like last week, I have also included an instrumental from a non-surf/instro band. This week it's a track from the legendary UK band The Smiths (this tune's perfect for those of you who can't stand Morrissey!). If you have any requests/comments, please send an e-mail to: records@dblcrown.com or use the handy comment form below.

Double Crown On The Rocks - Podcast #12
Double Crown On The Rocks - Podcast #12This show is just a mix of old and new surf/instro music. However, with this and future shows I hope to feature at least one instrumental track per show by a band that isn't normally thought of as a surf/instro band. This week it's a track from Scottish pop artists Belle & Sebastian. If you have any requests/comments, please send an e-mail to: records@dblcrown.com or use the handy comment form below.

Important Announcement Regarding Double Crown On The Rocks Podcast
First of all, thanks to everyone that has downloaded and sent in comments about the Double Crown On The Rocks podcast. It's been a lot fun putting each show together. However, I'm running into a slight problem with my current online storage space. To increase space I will need to pay more each month, and while I have received a few donations for the podcast, it's not nearly enough to pay for added space. So at this point, I will need to either reduce the number of shows available at any given time from 3 shows to 2 shows, I will need to reduce the length of each show to about 20 minutes, or I will need to reduce the sound quality of each show.It really wouldn't take much to add more storage space - $10 or so each month would pay for another 100-200 megs of space, which is enough for 4-8 shows at the current sound quality. Since I do the show on a Mac, I could also open a .Mac account and store the show there - that option is $99/year for 1 gig of space.
At the moment about 100 people are downloading each show, so if each person donated $1 I could open a .Mac account and store every show (up to about 30-40 of them). I could also potentially make the show longer, perhaps 30-40 minutes/show. Without donations, I will stick to the current format, but will have to reduce the number of shows I have online to about 2 shows at any given time.
If you like the show please make a Paypal donation for any amount by clicking the button below.
